§ 14-12. Requirements for classified/registered dogs.

  • (a)

    The owner of a classified dog shall notify the dog control officer within 24 hours if the dog is on the loose or has attacked a human and shall notify the dog control officer within 24 hours if the dog has died or has been euthanized.

    (b)

    A vicious dog shall not be transferred, sold, or donated to any other person unless it is relinquished to a governmental facility or veterinarian to be euthanized.

    (c)

    The owner of a classified dog who moves from one jurisdiction to another within the State of Georgia shall register the classified dog in the new jurisdiction within ten days of becoming a resident and notify the dog control officer of the jurisdiction from which he or she moved. The owner of a similarly classified dog who moves into this state shall register the dog as required in O.C.G.A. § 4-8-27 within 30 days of becoming a resident.

    (d)

    Issuance or renewal of a certificate of registration does not guarantee or constitute proof that the requirements of this section have been maintained following the date of issuance of such certificate.

    (e)

    An annual fee of $100.00 shall be charged by the animal control officer for registration and annual renewal of registration of dangerous and vicious dogs. At the time of annual renewal of such registration, the animal control officer shall require such evidence from the owner, or make such investigation as may be necessary, to verify that the owner is continuing to comply with all of the provisions of this chapter.

    (f)

    If a temporary certificate of registration has been issued, once a determination is made following a hearing, the owner of the dangerous or vicious dog shall immediately pay the required fee and receive a certificate of registration. The annual renewal date shall be calculated from the date the initial classification was made and a temporary certificate of registration was issued.

    (g)

    Within 30 days of the date a dog has been determined to be dangerous or vicious, the dog's owner shall have the animal sterilized and provide proof to animal control of the sterilization.
